This DVD, put out by Tomas Medina, teaches you how to look like a side-show Geek, without having to really do anything dangerous or disgusting. (Note -- the effects could be dangerous if truly attempted, and you do deal with things like broken glass and human saliva in some of them, so they are not completely danger free. But you do not have to really drink motor oil or eat glass or shove tic tacs up your nose... Just use normal care when performing.)
The effects are not for everyone, but Medina's handling of the classic Indian Bean trick (using Tic Tac mints) is a good example of how this kind of edgy magic can be both entertaining and also extremely mystifying. Other standouts for both entertainment and mystery are the balloon swallowing, the classic razor blade trick, and even his Cricket deck, where a bunch of live crickets appear in the middle of a card trick. His rubber cigarette trick fooled me badly when it turned into a real cigarette. Bravo.
The other material on the DVD includes drinking motor oil, eating glass, torn and restored straw wrapper (which is restored inside your nostril...) and everyone's favorite effect, drinking other people's saliva. Medina is clear that these effects are not for everyone, and not for every audience. But I must admit I am tempted to try having 4-5 of my friends spit in a dixie cup and watch me drink it, just to see their reaction. (And, no, you don't really drink anyone's saliva.) Still, even if you only learn the five effects I described in the previous paragraph (and you skip all the super Geek stuff), you will have gotten a lot of great magic from the DVD.
Medina is an excellent entertaininer, and his geeky looks and self-deprecating humor help him get away with doing a lot of these tricks that tread the border of good taste (or fall over it). I am always glad to see truly polished and entertaining performers on magic DVDs, and often this is not the case. But you can learn a lot about comedy performance just from watching how Medina routines and presents these routines.
I never thought I would recommend a Geek Magic video, but... you should buy this. UNLESS YOU ARE UNDER 18. AS STATED BEFORE, THE EFFECTS ON THIS DVD COULD BE DANGEROUS IF NOT PERFORMED WITH CARE AND AS DESCRIBED OR IF YOU TRY TO DO THEM "FOR REAL". SO WE WILL ONLY SELL THIS DVD TO A MAGICIAN OVER THE AGE OF 18.
Although this DVD has not been readily available for the last few years, this one is from new-old dealer inventory, so BRAND NEW AND STILL SEALED.
