Although wooden matches are not so common anymore, they are still recognizable props and I have never had a contemporary audience question when I bring out one of my favorite wooden match tricks.
Ken deCourcy put together a mini reference book on match magic -- it features four sections, on magic tricks, mental magic, gags and a few puzzles. Amost all the items are impromptu, so learning these gives you more ammunition for those "do a trick" moments
