I bought a Checker-X from Mak Magic back in the 1970's and I was disappointed that it was made with hollow plastic shapes, rather than solid wooden ones. But this is a case where the current product from Mak is BETTER than the older vintage version. MAK has recently re-released Checker-X, and it is beautifully made with solid wood round blocks. So now this U.F. Grant classic can be performed again, and you can be extra proud of the props while you are fooling the pants off your spectators.
The effect is simple: four round blocks are shown. each block has a hole in the middle, so that they can be threaded onto a rope. One color block is chosen (say, yellow), and it is threaded onto the rope. The other three blocks are double threaded on the rope, and the rope is knotted at the ends, so they are held in place securely by the yellow block at one end and the knot at the other. (The knot is real, and is not undone during the effect, so it can be tied and/or examined by the spectator). The rope "necklace" is placed around the magi's neck, with the blocks hanging in front. The spectator is challenged to remove any of the blocks without cutting the rope. Of course, he cannot. Now the necklace is hung around the spectator's neck, with the blocks hanging behind his back. In less than three seconds, the magi brings forth three of the blocks, and lifts the rope to show the knot and yellow block still in place.
Everything is examinable, because Grant's ingenious method accomplishes the effect with no gimmicks whatsoever.
Good for kids because of the colorful props they are familiar with -- they look like toy blocks. But also intriguing for adults because of the amazing and puzzling effect.
